This weekend, Bloomington and Monroe County area kids will launch the pilot of a new youth entrepreneurship program, the "2011 Lemonade Day Bloomington Kickoff,” which will take place on June 18, 2011 at the Bloomington Farmer's Market from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and at the Taste of Bloomington from 3 to 5 p.m.

Multiple community partners have come together to pilot the youth entrepreneurship program, including: the Gayle & Bill Cook Center for Entrepreneurship at Ivy Tech Community College-Bloomington, City of Bloomington Economic and Sustainable Development Department, Monroe County Government, the Boys and Girls Club of Bloomington and Girls Inc. of Monroe County.

Ivy Tech Bloomington Chancellor John Whikehart says this type of collaborative partnership is what makes Bloomington and Monroe County a vibrant community. "The Lemonade Day project is an example of how the community can support youth entrepreneurship education, while using a simple and practical idea, an old-fashioned lemonade stand,” Whikehart said.

Lemonade Day, held each year in cities across America, is a fun, experiential learning program that teaches youth how to start, own and operate their own business using a lemonade stand as well as teaches fundamental lessons about life, community and philanthropy. The goal of this initial pilot launch is to raise awareness of the program and recruit participants and volunteers for the official launch of the program in May 2012.

"This opportunity for children to learn what it takes to plan for, start and operate a business could be the first step in an entrepreneurial future,” Danise Alano-Martin, Director of Economic and Sustainable Development for the City said.
