GREEN BAY - A recent survey conducted by the Fabricators & Manufacturers Association, Intl. (FMA) shows that 73 percent of kids polled have little or no interest in entering the manufacturing field as a career path. According to the FMA, the majority of workers in the manufacturing sector will be retiring in less than 10 years, leading to an industrial tsunami if America doesn't prepare to replace them. Northeast Wisconsin Technical College is contributing to the solution by inspiring area youth to explore manufacturing through a four-day summer camp experience. This camp is limited to girls only to inspire a collaborative and supportive environment where the campers can excel at what is often thought of as masculine skills.

Campers will experience a high-tech, hands-on introduction to 21st-century manufacturing technology and basic entrepreneurial skills. Using the most sophisticated equipment in the industry, campers will create a jewelry line from start to finish. Participants will explore 3D design, computer numerical control (CNC) programming, welding, machining, entrepreneurship and more, while emphasizing product creation, problem solving and team building. Visits to area manufacturers will provide an up-close look at products being made as well as career advice and inspiration from the entrepreneurs who own and run the companies.
