Fab Lab ICC reps invited to Washington, D.C. advocacy event

Kauffman Foundation’s Annual State of Entrepreneurship Address

Fab Lab ICC will expand its efforts to educate the world about the power of entrepreneurship when its representatives visit the nation’s capital next week at the invitation of the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation.

Fab Lab Director Jim Correll and entrepreneur Joanne Smith, owner of FAB Creative Services, will attend the Kauffman Foundation’s annual State of Entrepreneurship address in Washington, D.C. The two-day event will include advocacy training by the foundation, and Correll and Smith will have the opportunity to engage with multiple congressional leaders on the subject of entrepreneurship and government support for entrepreneurial growth.

“This is an opportunity to redefine entrepreneurship at the highest level of government and illustrate the real impact true, grassroots entrepreneur initiative can have on our nation’s economy,” Correll said. “Meaningful, sustainable entrepreneurship, as we see it, is not only characterized by huge capital investment and state-of-the-art technology. It is also grown right here at home among small start-ups with the objective of problem solving and making a little corner of the world a better place to live, work and raise a family.”

The congressional visit initiative is part of the Kauffman Foundation’s campaign to lower the barriers to entrepreneurship for diverse populations and make opportunities for business ownership more equitable and inclusive.

To that end, the foundation recently awarded an $82,000 grant to Fab Lab ICC for its new Women 4 Women initiative, a two-year effort to encourage area women to explore entrepreneurial interests through mentoring, peer-to-peer networking, education and hands-on learning.

More information on the Women 4 Women program is available by contacting Smith, program coordinator, at 620-330-3006/, and more information on the offerings of Fab Lab ICC is available by contacting Correll at 620-252-5349/
