NetWork Kansas, a statewide organization supporting entrepreneurs and small businesses, recently endorsed an upcoming initiative of Fab Lab ICC with official board certification. NetWork Kansas has designated the Fab Lab’s three-day course “Community Bootcamp: Starting a Fab Lab from Ground Zero” as a board-certified program, allowing for fee assistance for participants from any of the 59 designated Kansas Entrepreneurship Communities (E-Communities).

Scheduled for February 20-22 in Independence, Community Boot Camp is designed to provide insights, tools and resources to other organizations interested in establishing maker spaces and entrepreneurial mindset education in their communities. Board certification by NetWork Kansas allows participants from E-Communities to qualify for funding to cover registration and travel expenses for the training.

Fab Lab’s Community Boot Camp is among a handful of elite programs that have earned NetWork Kansas board certification to date, including ELI's Ice House Entrepreneurship program; Wichita State University's Growing Rural Business program; The Schallert Group's Destination Business Boot Camp; NetWork Kansas' Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge (YEC) Series; and the Kansas Economic Gardening Network.

Fab Lab ICC Director Jim Correll acknowledged the NetWork Kansas certification as a welcome incentive for boot camp participation.

“We are proud to partner with NetWork Kansas on many initiatives at the Fab Lab, and this offering of registration assistance is another step in the right direction for encouraging entrepreneurship in small communities,” Correll said. “Our goal with the boot camp is to help other communities like ours replicate and even improve upon our model for supporting entrepreneurs and, in turn, realize true economic growth in their regions.”

Correll said Community Boot Camp will include lessons learned from Fab Lab ICC leaders regarding establishing an entrepreneurial mindset and a maker space in our community. The event also will showcase the impact of the facility from the perspective of community members and entrepreneurs. Participants will engage in “making” exercises and will take home a collection of example plans and processes. They also will benefit from two post-camp phone consultations with Correll.
