Empowering Entrepreneurship Conference on Entrepreneurship, Education and Training

Colorado Mountain College is planning our second annual conference on entrepreneurship education and training, which will be held at our Timberline Campus in Leadville, Colorado on June 11-13, 2009. The theme of this year’s conference is "Empowering Entrepreneurship.” We anticipate 75-100 participants from a wide range of entrepreneurship interests: K-16 educators, students, governmental agencies, and practicing entrepreneurs. The conference goal is to celebrate real life entrepreneurs and learn how to incorporate lessons from the real world into 21st century entrepreneurial education and training. In addition, we will highlight state of the art approaches to entrepreneurship as community and economic development by including topics of current interest such as business incubation, economic gardening, microlending, global business, and social and sustainable business. We have speakers who are well known in their fields and will present on state of the art approaches to entrepreneurship as community and economic development. 


Colorado Mountain College received an 2008 elevator grant from The Coleman Foundation for last year's conference and is using approved rollover funds for this 2009 conference. The Colorado Mountain College Foundation and local businesses are also contributing. The participant fee of $85.00 will cover the remaining cost of holding the event.


The opening reception on Thursday evening, June 11 will be at the historic National Mining Museum and Hall of Fame ( The guests will enjoy a free museum tour, which includes a simulated mining experience and an amazing collection of rocks and minerals. On Friday, June 12, we have a full day of educational sessions. On Saturday morning, June 13, we have a ceremony for the 2009 Spirit of Entrepreneurship award, which we give to an entrepreneur nominated and selected by the conference participants. As part of the Saturday activities, the author and entrepreneur Gregg Vanourek ( will speak on "Leading and Living with an Entrepreneural Mindset."


In addition, Leadville offers unique outdoor experiences and an interesting choice of cuisines from traditional Mexican to Italian. For participants and their families, we are organizing a tour of the Leadville mining district and a workshop in flyfishing on the Upper Arkansas River for Saturday afternoon, June 13, after the conference wrap-up session. We hope people will stay for the weekend to enjoy the area’s heritage and vistas of Colorado's highest peaks that are over 14,000 feet.


We look forward to participation and support from a wide cross section of students, educators, and business people who support and practice entrepreneurship. Our goal is to offer this conference as an annual event to enhance and expand entrepreneurship education and training.
