NorthWest Arkansas CC Announces New Option/Certificate in Entrepreneurship

NorthWest Arkansas Community College (NWACC) in Bentonville, AR, has announced a new Option/Certificate in Entrepreneurship in the AAS Degree in Business. The AAS Degree consists of 15-16 hours of required general education courses, 27 hours of required core business courses and 21 hours of additional requirements for the entrepreneurial emphasis. The certificate program consists of 21 credit hours with 21 pre-requisite hours and includes the core entrepreneurship courses. The first course in entrepreneurship will be offered in fall 2008.

The entrepreneurship courses include Introduction to Entrepreneurship, Opportunity/Feasibility Analysis, Professional Selling/Advertising, Funding Acquisition for Entrepreneurs, and the capstone course, Small Business Management. The capstone course will include writing a complete business plan and demonstrating required program outcomes in a one-hour internship at a small business to assist the small business with problems and/or needs. The entrepreneurship courses are designed to work as credit, non-credit or as seminar courses that can be credit or non-credit.

NWACC and other community colleges in Arkansas are collaborating to make the entrepreneurship degree available as a statewide curriculum. In addition, NWACC is in preliminary discussions with a four-year Arkansas university to allow students completing the AAS degree to transfer the courses toward a bachelor’s degree in business with an entrepreneurship emphasis.

Entrepreneurship is not a new concept to Northwest Arkansas. Sam Walton, the Tyson, Simmons and Petersen families, and J.B. Hunt are only a few of the entrepreneurs who called northwest Arkansas “home.” NWACC is in the final design stages of the Global Business Development Center, a 40,000-square-foot center to house the NWACC business and computer information classes, Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) room, resource center for businesses, Entrepreneurial Studies Institute, Retail Institute, Transportation and Logistics Institute, a P-16 Center, Culinary Arts Institute, and meeting rooms.
