Statewide Business Plan Pitch Competition Winners

SACRAMENTO – On June 19th, the California Community Colleges Small Business Sector held the finals for the “Get a Taste of Success” Business Plan Pitch Competition (  The competition was open to high school and community college teams from across the state who competed in ten regional competitions that rolled up to the statewide competition.  Judges selected the following teams as the statewide winners of the competition:

High School Division:                

1st Place:              Finding Common Ground - Santa Barbara High School

2nd Place:             Smartphone Solution - El Modena High School

3rd Place:             Flutter Shutters - West Valley High School

Community College Division:

1st Place:              Take "N" Charge - San Diego Mesa College

2nd Place:             SkyScout - Irvine Valley College

3rd Place:             Inspired Aquaponics - Canada College

The competition was held as part of the statewide Small Business Summit in Sacramento on June 19th which will feature ten locations across the state tied together via high definition videoconference to share a keynote speaker, presentations by faculty entrepreneurship champions, and the business plan pitch finals.  The keynote speaker will be Dr. Randal Pinkett, CEO of BCT Partners, a multimillion-dollar management consulting and information technology solutions firm.  Dr. Pinkett is also author of “Campus CEO: The Student Entrepreneur’s Guide to Launching a Multimillion-Dollar Business,” and winner of season four of NBC’s hit reality show “The Apprentice” with Donald Trump (

“Business plan pitch competitions such as this provide an opportunity for experiential learning and are a great way to infuse or embed entrepreneurship skills into our existing career technical education programs.  I am sure we will see some future entrepreneurial leaders emerge out of this effort,” says Charles Eason, the Small Business Sector Navigator for the California Community Colleges.
