PHOENIX, AZ – October 13, 2014 -- The National Association of Community College Entrepreneurship (NACCE), the nation’s leading organization focused on promoting entrepreneurship through community colleges, has named Long Beach Community College District in Long Beach, CA, as its 2014 Entrepreneurial College at its 12th Annual Conference, powered by Intuit, now underway in Phoenix. Also, Shari Olson, president of South Mountain Community College in Phoenix, was been named NACCE’s 2014 Entrepreneurial President.

2014 Entrepreneurial College

“Long Beach Community College District is a shining example of what a community college can do when it commits itself to developing and supporting entrepreneurship,” said NACCE President and CEO Heather Van Sickle. “As an active entity within the Southern California entrepreneur ecosystem, the college has mobilized and gathered resources within the ecosystem to assist early stage and established entrepreneurs through interconnected programs that support them at critical points in their lifecycle, providing them with business skill-sets, resources and relationships to help them succeed. Job creation is central to the entrepreneurship programs at LBCC.

“Long Beach Community College District has been a strong supporter of NACCE programs and partnerships,” added Van Sickle. “Their president, Eloy Ortiz Oakley, was an early signer of the NACCE Presidents for Entrepreneurship Pledge, and the college has made significant progress on all five steps of the pledge. They have participated in the NACCE-Sam’s Club Shared Vision, which supports critical training and services for small business owners. Also, Executive Vice President Lou Anne Bynum and her team, including College Advancement and Economic Development Executive Director Sheneui Weber, are active members of NACCE and have played leadership roles nationally and regionally in the development and launch of entrepreneurial and small business programs in the past nine years.”

2014 Entrepreneurial President

NACCE’s 2014 Entrepreneurial President, Shari Olson, joined South Mountain Community College in mid-2011 and has worked steadily since to increase the college’s focus on entrepreneurship, both in terms of how the institution itself thinks and operates and also regarding how the college supports the entrepreneurial aspirations of its students.

“Shari Olson lives and exemplifies the mindset and culture of entrepreneur-ship noted in the process of entrepreneurial effectuation that NACCE encourages all our members to build on,” said NACCE’s Van Sickle. “She has worked to build a culture in which staff, faculty and students are inspired and permitted to engage their passion, pursue possibilities, and move through the effectual cycle to new means and goals.”
