Bunker Hill Community College held an informal gathering of entrepreneurs and small business owners on July 22 to discuss a new Community Center for Entrepreneurship that the college will launch this fall. The center will offer courses, programs and events to promote business growth, with a particular emphasis on Charlestown and Chelsea, MA, homes to the college’s two campuses. The event was sponsored by Cabot Creamery.

“In this competitive economy, business owners and entrepreneurs require access to new ideas and training if their enterprises are to succeed,” said Bogusia Wojciechowska, Dean of Professional Studies. “This new Community Center for Entrepreneurship expands BHCC’s commitment to that work. This first event was a chance for networking and for us to hear what services will most benefit the businesses in our communities.”

BHCC is seeking individuals to join an advisory committee that will help develop Center programs. The Coleman Foundation and the John E. & Jeanne T. Hughes Foundation are among the funders of the new Center. Support will also be provided through the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act of 2006 and the Boston Advanced Technological Education Connections (BATEC), a regional system of technical education for workforce development.

Bunker Hill Community College is Massachusetts’ largest community college. The college enrolls almost 9,000 students on two campuses and at five satellite locations each semester. Some 1,700 students take classes online. BHCC is one of the most diverse institutions of higher education in the Commonwealth. Six in ten students are people of color and more than half of BHCC’s students are women. The college also enrolls more than 640 international students who come from more than 103 countries and speak 75 different languages.
