Developing Successful Entrepreneurship Programs in Community Colleges

American colleges and universities have embraced entrepreneurship, making it the fastest-growing field of study on campuses in recent decades. Community colleges, in particular, hold a great deal of potential for cultivating entrepreneurship in American higher education. They are uniquely positioned to respond to student demand for opportunities to explore entrepreneurship as an option. However, developing an entrepreneurial mindset throughout an institution and introducing curriculum that involves entrepreneurship across campus is no easy or instant task.


In response, Tina Sterling of T C Strategies, Inc. and Donna Duffey of Johnson County Community College will share a “how-to” tool for community colleges to begin to implement and to grow entrepreneurship initiatives—a process that is proven, effective, and efficient. The content, which provides a 9-Step approach, is based upon years of experience working with and for higher education throughout the country to develop entrepreneurship initiatives. Both Tina and Donna are sought after speakers and consultants on entrepreneurship education.



The symposium will provide a clear understanding of the process of developing a successful entrepreneurship initiative. This process will help save time and resources. Participants will:
  • Share ideas and discuss. Engage in an interactive hands-on facilitated process that outlines steps to developing successful entrepreneurship initiatives.
  • Explore what others are doing. Examine successful entrepreneurship initiatives and curriculum among institutions throughout the country.
  • Establish a vision. Participate in a visioning process that will provide an opportunity to be clear about the goals and outcomes of the entrepreneurship initiative and ensure all are “on the same page”. This will jump-start the strategic planning process.
  • Comprise the “right” team. Explore potential advisory committee members, identify key roles and responsibilities for selecting a champion to best drive the initiative, and discover best practices for engaging community support.
  • Explore curriculum. Participate in a facilitated discussion that will look at various avenues for creating entrepreneurship curriculum. This process will reveal both courses and learning objectives common to entrepreneurship curriculum and suggest ways to introduce curriculum in stages.
  • Discover best practices in marketing entrepreneurship education. Find out how institutions from around the country have been successful at marketing entrepreneurship curriculum, have built strong relationships both internally and externally, and formed strategic alliances.
  • Learn best practices in accessing funding. Learn what is of interest to funders and discuss best practices in accessing funds.


The 9-Steps include:

·         A clear process for establishing institutional and community commitment.

·         A visioning process for developing a strategic plan.

·         Best practices in establishing an advisory committee to drive the initiative forward.

·         Clearly defined roles and responsibilities of an internal champion.

·         Tools to be used to implement a strategic plan.

·         Best practices in developing an entrepreneurship curriculum.

·         Best practices in marketing both internally and externally.

·         Processes and tools for evaluating and measuring results.

·         Ways to seek funding and to sustain and growth the initiative.


  • Faculty and/or Administrators interested in developing entrepreneurship programs/initiatives within their institutions.
  • Persons representing credit, non-credit, and administration. These individuals would include:
    • Administrators who would facilitate the entrepreneurship initiatives through their institution’s administrative channels.
    • Internal champions who are individuals responsible for driving the initiative forward.
    • Faculty or Administration who would like to explore various models of entrepreneurship education and discuss or share best practices.
