John Pappajohn Awarded NACCE Lifetime Achievement Award

6th Annual Conference | Lifetime Achievement Recipient John Hughes

John E. Hughes currently serves as a Director of The Coleman Foundation, and holds the position of Board Chairman Emeritus. He also heads J.E. Hughes Enterprises, and the John E. and Jeanne T. Hughes Foundation. He has spoken at over 100 colleges and universities and numerous entrepreneurship conferences across the country.

Mr. Hughes was born in February, 1927; dropped out of high school in 1944, volunteered for military service in World War II, serving with the parachute infantry. After leaving the service, he obtained a high school GED in 1947, and went on to receive his C.P.A. certificate, from the University of Illinois, in 1957. In 1968 he founded his own C.P.A. After selling his firm, he went on to be an owner and CEO at Archibald/Fannie May Candy Shops, Inc. from 1981 through 1991, selling his interest in October 1991.

John is passionate about self-employment and its positive impact on individuals and communities. He initiated and advanced the Coleman Foundation's entrepreneurship program. He has received many recognitions and awards, including a Doctorate of Humane Letters in 2003 by DePaul University's College of Commerce, given in recognition of his many contributions to education; he was named Best Supporter of Entrepreneurship and Retail Executive Entrepreneur of the Year in 1989; and received the Lifetime Entrepreneur Award from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1991.

Besides his continuing work today in philanthropy and entrepreneurship education, his love for the sport of baseball has led him to yet another role. He is one of the founding owners of the Schaumburg Flyers Independent Northern League Professional Baseball Team.
