Keynote Speaker: Carlene Cassidy


Carlene Cassidy

Associate Professor of Business Management and Entrepreneurship at Anne Arundel Community College  


Carlene M. Cassidy, Associate Professor of Business Management and Entrepreneurship, and founding Director of Anne Arundel Community College’s (AACC) Entrepreneurial Studies Institute (ESI).  Carlene has over 30 years of experience in business, management and information systems. She has worked in a variety of industries including health care, retail, computer information systems, and education. Prior to joining AACC, she was a partner and Chief Operating Officer for a multi-million dollar, regional computer consulting firm. In addition, Carlene has managed mergers, acquisitions; and she has launched several start-up initiatives from a health care staffing company to her own consulting firm providing information systems and management consulting services to health care organizations, educational institutions and small service companies.

Carlene has experience with curriculum and program development. She wrote several new courses related to entrepreneurship at AACC including: Entrepreneurial Thinking, Creativity and Opportunity Recognition; New Venture Planning; and Legal Issues for Small Business. She also developed the Entrepreneurship Associate degree and multiple specialty certificates in entrepreneurship. In addition to teaching entrepreneurship at AACC, she also teaches a variety of business and technology subjects in both college and corporate environments. Her specialty areas include entrepreneurship, leadership, management, supervision, strategic planning, business communication, and computer information systems.

In addition to the credit courses and programs at AACC, Carlene also created and managed the student incubator and small business resources center. She also planned an annual conference on campus, multiple workshops and guest speakers, and student trips including local travel to Baltimore & Washington, DC and overseas to China.  She is also responsible for planning business competitions, advising the student entrepreneurs’ club and serving as liaison and board member for several area business organizations. In addition, Carlene was instrumental in raising more than two million dollars in funds to support scholarships, the incubator, events, competitions, and a seed fund for graduates. 

In 2009, Carlene received the Entrepreneurship Faculty of the Year Award from the National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship. She also received Anne Arundel Community College Student Association’s highest honor, the Distinguished Service Award and she was the 2008 Faculty Advisor of the Year. She is a YWCA Tribute to Women in Industry Honoree, and she has been included multiple times in the Who’s Who Among American Teachers.

The Board of Trustees at AACC awarded Carlene a sabbatical during the Spring of 2015. Carlene’s research includes a comprehensive survey and analysis assessing how small to medium size enterprises are using social media and virtual communities for business. Carlene has also traveled the country visiting innovation centers, Fab labs, maker spaces and entrepreneurial ventures to learn more about how to facilitate creativity, innovation, and economic growth.

Carlene is a co-author of three textbooks: Administrative Management, 1st Edition (© 2015 South-Western Cengage Learning), Management, 12th Edition (© 2013 South-Western Cengage Learning) and Supervision: Setting People Up For Success, 1st Edition (© 2010 South-Western Cengage Learning). In her spare time she volunteers her services to the community serving on multiple non-profit boards of directors and committees.

She has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Health Services Administration from Providence College, a Master of Science Degree in Information Systems and Telecommunications from Johns Hopkins University, and a Graduate Certificate in Social Media and Virtual Communities for Business from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
