Workshop #2 - Opportunities For Self Employment

Between workshop #1 and workshop #2, each participant was required to identify and interview a local entrepreneur from their discipline area of teaching AND to create a learning plan for how to utilize this entrepreneur live in their classroom to merge academia with the "real world".  (and do be prepared to help the faculty find acceptable entrepreneurs....I asked them to register their entrepreneurs ahead of time so that I could approve their choices and/or help them find more/better choices.  Next go-around, I will create a formal "Entreprener Registration" form to collect the info pre-interview and have room for a post paragraph summary follow up....hint/hint)

This second workshop theme was "Opportunity". 

I started by showing the instructors about entrepreneurial opportunities in the Nebraska and Omaha-metro area by giving a basic summary of "background info".  I then shared with them how to access general and specific databases MCC has purchased for entrepreneurial information such as ReferenceUSA and First Research.  This enabled us to locate everyone's Industry Analysis forecasts (which they loved!) and prompted a not planned discussed about MCC's Career Center.  I was VERY surprised about how many (more so adjuncts) did not know that MCC's Career Center provided workforce data reports for each discipline areas by just asking for it to help teachers be able to discuss the job outlook market.  Now, I was able to show them how to obtain economic development data/reports to be able to show their students the other side of the coin:  how to create their own business (and therefore job) which is known as economic development. 

I was aware that when I had surveyed my peer teachers from other disciplines that when I asked them "What do you do"?, that they usually answered very technically what they teach.  When I would follow up and ask, "What do you prepare your students to be able to do....?", most would answer in some format to have their students be able to get a job.  Now, our entreprener champion faculty members have tool belts loaded with an arson or resources to address that they prepare students to get jobs AND start businesses in their academic discipline areas!

The other great focus in workshop #2 was inspiring the faculty to teach innovatively through creative thinking application.  This in itself can be done through modeling examples throughout the workshop - which we did; but also having a specific topical discussion on this.  We used many "things" such as The Whack Pack (thanks to my friends at Southeast CC in Lincoln for turning me onto this tool!), games, videos, etc....
