The race has begun!

Posted By Lisa Bah, Monday, December 6, 2010

We are in the preliminary stages of developing a curriculum for a two-week long BizTech Academy, which will be offered late June, 2011. Students will choose between a Nanoscience Technology or and Imagineering track in the morning. The groups will join together for the Entrepreneurship track in the afternoon, so that the business of science and the science of business overlap. We determined that the cost per student would be just over $8 for every hour of training, including instructors, guest speakers, site rental, field trips, meals and all materials.

We requested $10,000 from the Coleman Foundation, of which we committed to securing $2,500 or more in local match by December 1. Christine Pigsley, Dean of General Education/Entrepreneurship instructor, and I began marketing BizTech Academy to area school districts, local youth councils, the Workforce Investment Board (WIB), and our own Entrepreneurship Board. Rather than seeking one matching grant, we opted to ask for contributions towards a student in need. In the end, we received commitments from several companies, the WIB, and individuals, ranging from $100 up to $1,000, and exceeded our matching goal. We are continuing to seek out additional funding, in hopes that we can serve more students than originally planned.
