October Report for Bunker Hill Community College

October 2009

Items worked on:

  • New clients included:  start clothing business, start vacuum truck business, selling Learn to Speak Spanish books for kids.
  •  Hosted Franchising Event, “Own Your Own Business and Be Your Own Boss…Is Franchising for YOU?” on October 21, 2009.  Panelists included Jim Sullivan, Vice President of the Friendly's Franchise Division, Joanna B. Meiseles, Founder and President of The Snip-its Corporation, Jeff Sturgis, Vice President of Fantastic Sams Franchise Sales and Anna Marie Beech, Owner of  Fantastic Sams in Charlestown.  An email flyer and posters were created to advertise the event.  Over 40 people attended.  Theresa Marino, Friendlys HR manager attended the event.  Referral was made to Career Center and now Friendly's will have table at Career Fair in November.
  • Continued coordination of GEW event for YEA students.
  • The Coleman Foundation Elevator Grant pitch was made at the NACCE conference and BHCC was awarded a $7,500 grant to continue developing pathways to BHCC for high school students.
  • Intern from Simmons College continues to research the viability of a non-credit entrepreneurship certificate program and drafting a proposal for a 2-week pathways to college summer program for high school students.
  • Continued work with the MA State Office of Small Business and Entrepreneurship to schedule a restaurateur entrepreneur to speak.  BHCC has been chosen as one of 5 colleges in the state to be part of a pilot speaker series program that will profile local entrepreneurs.  Targeted event date is late February 2010.
  • Working with 2 BHCC students in an IT class that are developing a facebook page for the Community Center of Entrepreneurship.  Page should be completed as a class project by early December.  Students also working to establish the Center's presence on LinkedIn and Twitter. 
  • Continued work on articulation agreements.  (Will post those once they are signed.)
  •  The City of Boston Office of Business Development has asked the CCE at BHCC to host the next Small Business Assistance Strategy Group Meeting.  It will be held on December 16, 2009

Discussion of legal considerations for small business owners and legal issues related to going “green.”

John Pepper, Founder and CEO, Boloco Restaurants
Discussion of challenges of embracing green business practices and how it has helped make Boloco a success


6 – 7:30 p.m., A300 Lobby, “Immigrant Entrepreneurs,” Gary C. David, PhD, Bentley University




1:30 – 2:30 p.m., A300 Lobby

Panel Discussion: “Going Green: Social Responsibility, Sustainability and Profitability”

Panel includes Dan Curtin of zipcar, C.A.Webb of Preserve Products and Andrew Prescott of Urban AdvenTours



10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m., A300 Lobby

Young Entrepreneurs Alliance (YEA) – Holiday Card Products and Design Services Pitch
The YEA business team from Digitize, a student-led digital design firm based at Assabet Valley

Regional High School, will pitch their services to BHCC students, staff and local business professionals.
