Associate in Science in Marketing Management

Miami Dade College, FL - $7,500 to develop collateral marketing materials focusing on awareness of the Entrepreneurship Certificate program and Associate in Science in Marketing Management with a concentration in entrepreneurship while also increasing communication with high school administration, faculty and staff.

This is our second year as an elevator grant winner and we are very excited about the opportunity to continue to build our program. With the funding from the first year we were able to send six faculty members (3 full time, 2 adjuncts and one community education) for e-ship education training at "NFTE U" (NFTE is the National Foundation for the Teaching of Entrepreneurship). Our first business plan competition is being held this semester as a result.

Last Week, as part of the College's annual conference day, we had the distinct pleasure of hosting Donna Duffey from Johnson County Community College as a guest speaker. As you may know, she is a wealth of information regarding e-ship programs. With her help, we had our first discussions about creating cross discipline certificates with representatives from the the art, biology and music production departments. We believe that focusing on these areas is another way we can increase awareness at the high school and college levels about the needs for e-ship education in a variety of disciplines.

April has been a great month for the E-ship program at MDC. As part of last year's Coleman grant we promised to host the School's first ever business plan competition. The event was a great success. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of Dr. Cruz, chairperson at our Wolfson campus, we had multiple faculty advisors (Economics, Accounting and Hospitality Management Faculty) working with student groups who presented business plans for things ranging from eco-friendly cleaning services to organic vending machines. The competition was judged by local business representatives and entrepreneurs and the winners received cash prizes. We are already planning for next year's competition and our faculty have provided input on ways we can make it even better.

Also this month we have continued our conversations with the local office of NFTE and cant help but be optimistic about potential grant opportunities we can work together on.

And finally, we are making some progress with our e-ship awareness campaign. Although the items (brochure and video) are far from complete, we have started drafting ideas and getting input from the experts. We are also making connections with the Career Pathways office within the Public School system in hopes that this will help our future campaign.

The spring semester has come to a close and the summer session has just begun- time is flying! Our idea to create a video, brochure and campus specific materials to promote the entrepreneurship program to high school and college students, teachers, career and academic advisors is coming along, although now that we are far into the process we understand that it is a huge undertaking. A journalist for a local newspaper is currently writing an article that highlights not only our programs but also some of our alumni successes, and we certainly welcome the free press.

We were recently able to promote the program to thousands (Yes, thousands!) of high school students who attended the career pathways expo offered to students in the K-12 system.

Our partnership with the local NFTE office is strengthening each day and I am very grateful as it increases opportunities for the program. We have now added several representatives from the public school system to our monthly meetings and we are certainly making progress on plans for an entrepreneurship education pathway. Considering our program is less than two years old, this is very exciting!

One item that isn’t progressing as quickly as we would like is the adoption of entrepreneurship courses in other disciplines. A few months ago we managed to create some excitement with the science and art departments about the creation of programs that would include entrepreneurship courses. I have yet to find a way to take this excitement and turn it into action. My staff and I will have to regroup to find the best way to turn words into action. Hopefully I will have progress to report over the next few months.

Wow – Time Flies! I can’t believe it’s almost July.

June was a whirlwind of a month. We, along with our NFTE partners, did meet with high level administrators at the School District this month to talk about the link between high school and MDC in terms of E-ship education. Their feedback was very positive. I am trying not to get my hopes up, but I believe we are on our way to a solid framework that will allow students to earn a complete college level e-ship credential while still in high school and that the program has the chance to expand to numerous high schools over the next few years. My biggest worry at this time is budget – trying to introduce new ideas and/or programs into schools who are struggling to offer current programs may prove challenging.

We are moving forward with the development of our marketing campaign materials as well. Working with both our internal media services and an outside production company is proving to be a challenge as well. If I ever do come up with any advice on how to manage this, I will be sure to post it!
