NACCE's Role & Commitment Vision
Entrepreneurship is a key building block for economic prosperity. NACCE believes that entrepreneurship is the way to prepare students of all economic and social backgrounds to take on the role of entrepreneur. Serving nearly half of all undergraduates in the United States, community colleges are ideally suited to take the lead in developing future entrepreneurs based on their accessibility, strong ties to the local community, affordability and the diversity of their student base.
In 2010, NACCE elevated this discussion by bringing community colleges to the table with well-respected entrepreneurship-focused organizations such as the Kauffman Foundation, the Coleman Foundation, and the White House-led Startup America (now UP America), to build on existing opportunities and create new ones. Through the resulting NACCE Presidents for Entrepreneurship Pledge, community college presidents commit to advancing entrepreneurship in their communities and campuses and providing access points to support local startups and small businesses. These actions foster entrepreneurship by exposing and inciting individuals to create their own jobs and in many instances, create jobs for others, thus enhancing the economic vitality of the communities in which they live.
