What got me interested in my work: When I first started with the college, my background was in industry where I had struggled to find skilled workers. Also, I was working up to 80 hours a week, watching my family grow up without me. When I saw an opening for a training and development coordinator at Southeast, I thought this would be a great opportunity for me to use my knowledge and experience to help others while enjoying my young family.

One day, I saw a young man who appeared to be lost staring at a bulletin board. When I asked if I could help him, he said, “I’m looking for Vic Adams.” This young man had lost his job, and his wife and two small children had been forced to move to Ohio to stay with family. He was sleeping on a friend’s couch, and he simply wanted training so that he could get a job. He wanted his family back. I helped him enroll in our diesel technology program that day.

When I saw him at graduation two years later, receiving his degree, he had his wife and two children with him, cheering him on. He told me he had already secured a full-time job at Wayne Supply. He shook my hand and thanked me for helping him to not only earn his credentials and find a job, but for helping him find hope. This experience helped me to realize that I had found my calling.

Greatest Accomplishment: My two successful, grown sons Hunter and Tyler.

Success is... For me, success is providing the best opportunities for students, faculty, staff, and our communities at large

Pet Peeve: Left-laners.

Favorite Quote: “If you do what’s right, and do what’s best, you’re a winner.” — Jerry Claiborne, head football coach, University of Kentucky (1982-89)

Current Project: We are currently expanding our “Selling to the World” project into four counties. This initiative provides personalized one-on-one mentoring and workshops that equip individuals with the knowledge and skills to start and grow their businesses using web-based technology. The program promotes an entrepreneurial culture within the most economically disadvantaged parts of Eastern Kentucky

What impact has NACCE had on your college's entrepreneurship efforts? NACCE was the impetus behind “Selling to the World” with a $10,000 seed grant.
